چکیده
The existence of an on-line competitive algorithm for coloring bipartite graphs remains a tantalizing open problem. So far there are only partial positive results for bipartite graphs with certain small forbidden graphs as induced subgraphs, in particular for P7-free bipartite graphs. We propose a new on-line competitive coloring algorithm for P8-free bipartite graphs. Our proof technique improves the result, and shortens the proof, for P7-free bipartite graphs.

A New Algorithm for On-line Coloring Bipartite Graphs
We first show that for any bipartite graph H with at most five vertices, there exists an on-line competitive algorithm for the class of H-free bipartite graphs. We then analyze the performance of an on-line algorithm for coloring bipartite graphs on various subfamilies. The algorithm yields new upper bounds for the on-line chromatic number of bipartite graphs. We prove that the algorithm is on-...
متن کاملLower Bounds for On-line Graph Colorings
We propose three strategies for Presenter in on-line graph coloring games. The first one constructs bipartite graphs and forces any on-line coloring algorithm to use 2 log2 n − 10 colors, where n is the number of vertices in the constructed graph. This is best possible up to an additive constant. The second strategy constructs triangle-free graphs and forces Ω(n 1 2 ) colors. The third one cons...
متن کاملWeighted coloring on planar, bipartite and split graphs: Complexity and approximation
We study complexity and approximation of min weighted node coloring in planar, bipartite and split graphs. We show that this problem is NP-hard in planar graphs, even if they are triangle-free and their maximum degree is bounded above by 4. Then, we prove that min weighted node coloring is NP-hard in P8-free bipartite graphs, but polynomial for P5-free bipartite graphs. We next focus on approxi...
متن کاملTight Bounds for Online Coloring of Basic Graph Classes
We resolve a number of long-standing open problems in online graph coloring. More specifically, we develop tight lower bounds on the performance of online algorithms for fundamental graph classes. An important contribution is that our bounds also hold for randomized online algorithms, for which hardly any results were known. Technically, we construct lower bounds for chordal graphs. The constru...
متن کاملOn-Line Approach to Off-Line Coloring Problems on Graphs with Geometric Representations
The main goal of this paper is to formalize and explore a connection between chromatic properties of graphs with geometric representations and competitive analysis of on-line algorithms, which became apparent after the recent construction of triangle-free geometric intersection graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic number due to Pawlik et al. We show that on-line graph coloring problems give ...
